Let me just start off by saying, I didn't read the blurb and didn't realise this was a collection of three stories, I was very confused after I read the first story and it was over. I tend not to read the blurb/synopsis, as I prefer going in blind, I saw the genre, Sci-fi, and was intrigued by the title.
Note to self: read the bloody blurb!
It's kind of hard to give a synopsis of a short story without completely spoiling what happens, but basically, this book is a collection of accounts of alien invasions where unlikely heroes save the day.
Now onto the review:
Midnight by Colin Sinclair
I pretty much had no idea what was going on in the first half of this story, it took me awhile to get into the story, I kept putting it off. Things got more interesting towards the middle of the story, then everything started happening towards the end (which confused me as I didn't realise it was a short story). I felt the ending was slightly rushed and I was surprised by the abrupt ending (obviously I was expecting a full-blown novel). The story itself was overall alright, nothing special, it was interesting enough but ends with some unanswered questions.
The characters were quite entertaining, I particularly liked 'Chas', would've liked to see more of him.
2.5/5 stars. It wasn't great.
Blighters by Tim Major
This story was odd. I didn't really like any of the characters in this one, Becky was okay but not well written and Gail was trash. You can definitely tell these female characters were written by a man. The aliens in this story are 'Blighters', nothing is explained to when they got to earth or really what they are. These aliens make people high like they're on drugs and it's just bizarre.
I didn't really like the plot or the character development, I wanted more explanation about the Blighters and we didn't get that. Sigh.
1.5 stars. It was just 'meh'.
Rags, Bones and Tea leaves by Julian Benson
I didn't finish this one, at this point in the book I had lost the will to live. I couldn't bring myself to force my way through another weird story.
I seriously had no desire to pick up this book, I kept putting it down. I tried to force myself to finish but it just wasn't for me. There's no point finishing a book you're not enjoying, in my opinion.
Overall, this book gets 2 stars from me.
